Living with the myth of Janis Joplin. The History of Big Brother & the Holding Co.

Written By: Michael Spörke
What Mick Jagger is for the Rolling Stones, or Freddie Mercury for Queen, Janis Joplin was for Big Brother & the Holding Company. Joplin’s story still determines the public view of the Band. Her passion for an intense life and her expressive singing made Janis famous. Like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison she is one of the outstanding stars of the Rock music of her time.

To many people, Big Brother and the Holding Company has always meant Janis Joplin. Big Brother, who gave Janis a platform for success by giving her the freedom and the energy to develop her musical style, were considered as amateurish and unprofessional by many reviewers. The critics downgraded Big Brother for a long time and in the Joplin biographies the band was marginalized. Janis Joplin became the singer of Big Brother in 1966, and in that group she found the space to become one of the best white blues singers in the world. Although Big Brother & the Holding Co. were known in the Bay Area of San Francisco a year before Janis Joplin joined them and although they still play today as an active band, there has never been written a real history of Big Brother.

This fame and glory of Janis Joplin overshadowed the band. Big Brother therefore is representative of all the overshadowed bands in music history. This book tells the band’s story, how difficult it is to find an identity separate from that of Janis Joplin’s overshadowing talent. As David Getz, the drummer of the band, says: “The fame of Big Brother is like a Golden Albatross. It hangs around your neck like a curse. But the curse is made of gold.” Read the rest of this entry →

Artist Kaye Ree ” Endless Melody”

“Endless Melody”, the debut album from the Germany based beauty Kaye Ree, is a soulful, almost sinful pleasure. Kaye Ree has just the right voice and vocal style for the compositions on “Endless Melody”, and she exudes sensuality with a talent that is reminiscent of and comparable to Sade. Her melodies are hauntingly beautiful as she sings about love on the majority of the tracks, but this is one lady who also knows how to keep it real.

On the tracks “Reality”, “Day ‘n’ Night”, “Money” and “On My Way”, she delves a little deeper in her subject matter and also performs these types of songs very nicely. I love her style and the control she has of her voice. She’s a really cool singer that every man who likes music (and/or good looks) could appreciate and would never get enough of. Kaye Ree’s looks are mesmerizing, but her singing is captivating and moving. She’s far from being just another pretty face in the music industry, which is quite refreshing. I always appreciate singers who have their own style and do their own thing, and  Kaye-Ree is just that.

“Reality” is my favorite on the CD because it is so straight up and full of truth that I can really relate to the song. The lyrics, music, and vocal performances are all strong. Of course, it’s that way throughout the remainder of the album as well. The 15 track CD is full of really great music and all is done to perfection. There’s also some interesting and very well played piano on the early part of the CD, and the music and musicians really complement this songstress well. Mixing R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop, Spoken Word, and great singing, Kaye Ree really delivers the goods. Read the rest of this entry →

Vinyl Strikes Back!

September 7, 2012 in News by Michele Wilson-Morris

30% (or 21 million people) of core music lovers plan to do the dance with vinyl again within the next 12 months

Technological improvements have certainly changed the way we listen to music over the decades. We went from vinyl records to 8-track tape to cassettes to what we now have – CDs, mp3s… and vinyl records? Yes, it’s back! A poll by Gracie Management found that 30% (or 21 million people) of core music lovers plan to do the dance with vinyl again within the next 12 months. Now, it’s true that history usually repeats itself, but technology? That’s a switch which musicians and labels are increasingly embracing.

The Plain Steel, a rock/folk ensemble from Hamilton, Ontario, have released their first feature length album on vinyl (and CD as well). A deluxe, double vinyl reissue of “Keystone Companions/The Complete 1973 Fantasy Recordings”, the very first Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia album, is planned for a September 25th release (also on CD). Spot-On-Sound, which is now a record label, has 2 exclusive vinyl only releases coming out over the next few months. And AM444 (Dutch producer Jay Soul and Chinese singer ChaCha from RBMA-2011) are released their first 12″ record entitled “Split Ends” at Shanghai’s Yuyintang on July 7th. The song “Eye Context” from San Francisco electro rock band Tussle will also be included on that album.

While some may see the return of vinyl as a fad by an industry desperate to cling to any growth sector, there are good reasons behind this resurrection. While CDs, which are digital, cost much less to produce, they tend to have a colder, brighter sound that sometimes has too much detail. The sound you hear on a vinyl record is analog, which is a much warmer presentation of the music. In fact, some artists are so adamant about capturing that warm sound that they refuse to record using anything else but analog. Now, of course, these are the high profile, multi-platinum selling artists who can command this level of compliance from the labels, but I digress. Once they’ve recorded using analog, the songs are then transferred to CD.

You see, music is all about sound, and just as artists know that, consumers know it as well. When we’re listening to Adele, we want to feel as if she’s right in the room with us singing. And as much as I love my CD collection, I’ll take Adele on vinyl over CD any day. Apparently, artists are beginning to give the people more of what they want, as increasingly more of them are releasing recordings on vinyl. Now, vinyl records are usually much more expensive to purchase, but that’s not stopping consumers. And if you’re familiar with the law of supply and demand, you know that if there’s a demand for something, the market will supply it.
Interestingly, the Grace Management Poll found that the “typical vinyl buyer is a male (62%) who listens to music as an intellectual experience (66%). In addition, he is more likely to be middle class with respect to income, and is either currently in college or has already graduated (69%).” The expectation is that this trend will continue to grow.
So, vinyl records are making a comeback. What’s next? Platform shoes? Click clacks? Hot pants? Actually, for those answers, you’ll have to wait and see or check with someone in fashion. This girl does music. And vinyl.

Hear it, and you become the Wolf’s captive.13 records later, Geri X delivers a sound, more addictive than ever: melodic, intimate, upbeat, packed with grit in each note and phrase.

It takes you on a downright honest self discovery. It is a superior crafted piece of musical autobiography with an alluring cover.

Work is the Wolf is the inherent ending of intense and exhausting touring and remarkable songwriting, combined with an “I’m better off” outlook on life. MathYou Ratón Up and Coming

April 8, 2012 in Featured Artist, Hip Hop by TMC

I’m a TEENAGE (16) Rapper/Singer/Songwriter from South Oh, New York City. I believe in making good music with with deep meanings to them. I rap mainly about thing that happens in my life and stuff around that nature, but I also rap/ sing about relationships, money, and reaching my dreams. I also do gangsta rap because i’m still from one of the worst hoods in NYC. I grew up with a single mother, and a dad who smoked weed, and drunk a lot so he isn’t apart of my life. Even though me and my father don’t keep in contact i still keep in touch with my strong Puerto Rican culture.

My main motivation for my music is for my two friends who died in the streets from a shootout. I do it for every story that has been forgotten and dismissed. Everyday someone in my borough gets killed and their often kids like me, so i fight for all my kid who have ever been told that their lives is meaningless, because living in that neighborhood all your teachers and even the polices basically treat you like your life is meaningless. Half Puerto Rican Half Africa American
