THE BLEND KING DJ I AM
What is the significance of your name and how did you get it?
How did you get the name?
I chose the name because I love & represent for The Lord God Almighty! I want to be clear in the music and entertainment business who i'm with. Unfortunately many people in the business have made it clear they are representing for the fallen one. I choose to honor God, use the talents He's given me, and acknowlede where my gifts as a DJ & Producer come from starting with my name!
What kind of music do you like to play the most?
What made you interested in DJing?
I feel in love with DJing when I first fell in love with Hip-Hop. I use to buy albums, tapes, mixtapes and tape DJs on the radio in NY. I first knew I wanted to be a DJ when I saw Jam Master Jay of (Run DMC) perform at Madison Square Garden. My favorite DJs go way back to people like DJ Hollywood (Hip-Hop Founder!) DJ Charlie Chase (Cold Crush Bros.), Grand Master Flash, DJ Red Alert, Mr. Magic & Marly Marl, Starski, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ S&S, DJ Clue, Funkmaster Flex, DJ Ron G, DJ Kid Capri, and my list goes on….
How long have you been a DJ?
More than 10 years.
Where are your favorite venues to spin at?
I like to spin where people really come to PARTY!! I don't like venues where people are fronting like they are too cool or too important to get on the dance floor and throw down! If you can envision Nelly's "Hot In Herre" or Jay-z's "Roc Boys" video those are my favorite types of venues. LOL I still have some dream venues that I would like to spin at too, like: Madison Square Garden, Essence Music Festival, BET & MTV Spring Break, Tom Joyner Cruise, Grammy Awards, The Super Bowl…LOL you get the idea…I want to be BIG!!
Outside of work, do you ever go out to clubs?
Do you take music requests?
It depends on the venue! If i'm spinning at a wedding, birthday party, or corporate event – Definitely!! I think at private events taking requests helps make the party better. At clubs or large public events I usually just read the crowd and do work!
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen while you were working?
A guy and his girl came to my booth, he stood behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and they both started shaking her double D boobs at me asking me to put my face in them and then asking me to autograph her chest. Crazy!! LOL
What’s been your biggest gig so far?
The College Circuit Has Been Big For Me. Eckerd College & Florida Gulf Coast University Were BIG events.
I'm also about to spin at the Metromix Hotter Than Hell Summer Kick-Off Party – That's gonna be MONSTER!!!
When you are up there, do you have a playlist or do you read the crowd?
I usually have a few songs in mind that I want to play, but I read and move the crowd!!
Best DJ experience?
Every experience is a blessing. But the first time I ever made a few Grand($) to spin definitely comes to mind. I totally love what I do!
Do you prefer playing at clubs or bigger events?
I like both but I prefer bigger events. I want to be an international music superstar. I think currently the DJs I look up to the most for their global presence are Jazzy Jeff, Tiesto, & David Guetta. I also plan to be a movie star one day, so bigger venues move me closer to my goals. Clubs can be great too, if the booth & house equipment are proper and as long as the owner / promoter don't give a problem when it comes to getting my money! LOL
With so much music now a days have you gone to Serato or do you still carry the old fashion milk crates?
I use to love digging in the crates but I hated carrying them to gigs! I'm soooo glad those days are definitely over. I work with M-audio's Torq & Serato. The technology is amazing especially since I'm a DJ & a VJ.
What DJs do you look up to?
A lot of them but my here's my top 15 – (not necessarily in order) Jam Master Jay, DJ Doo Wop, DJ Ted Smooth, DJ Tiesto, DJ Ty Boogie, DJ Clue, DJ S&S, Funkmaster Flex, Kid Capri, DJ Green Lantern, DJ Kayslay, DJ Ron G, DJ Khaled, DJ Envy, LiL Jon, DJ Khaled, DJ Red Alert.
Are you associated with or are you part of any groups in the music industry?
Would you or do you work with any radio station in the Tampa Bay area?
I don't currently, but I actually would love to work for a radio station in Tampa. Those that come to mind in no particular order of preference are Wild 94.1, 93.3 FLZ, & 95.7 The Beat. I listen to them and I like them. Frequently my people tell me that I would be great on the radio because they think I'm witty. It's that intern and wait your turn thing at the local stations I don't like…LOL, I'm seriously considering an internet radio show if I can't get on with a station in Tampa.
What are your future plans?
I plan to be an international super-star!! I'm building the Party 101 Productions & DJ I AM brand around the country currently, and I expect to continue adding DJs to our roster nationally. Within the next two years I will transition from being exclusively in the music business to roles on television and movies. I'm following a similar career path as people like: Will Smith, Queen Latifah, & Ludacris.
